February 6, 2025 at 3:52 pmA relative of mine is in her 50’s, slightly mentally retarded & married for 30 years. Her husband recently retired from government service & sold everything including house that she was given by her father . Now she’s with her parents & he’s demanding money to take care of her as she cannot do any household work. She is intellectually challenged & never did any housework. They always had a maid & her father paid for it all. So now he’s demanding 25000/month for maid & other expenses to take her with him. If her parents file a complaint asking him to take her with him or pay maintenance will they win ? Her parents are in their 80’s -

February 6, 2025 at 4:00 pmNot a lawyer but imo this is a straight dowry case. No way her parents wouldn’t win the case for dowry or maintenance (in case of divorce).-

February 6, 2025 at 4:19 pmThey are paying to clank down their headache in this whole fiasco tbh.Don’t you think they are looking absurdly stupid about the money they are giving to the son in law just to take care of their daughter ????
They could have easily let her live with them for the rest of her life with half the money spent.
Iam smelling “parents don’t want the headache” here.

February 6, 2025 at 4:21 pmNo parents are helpless as she won’t agree for a divorce & keep emotionally manipulating them with her desire to live with her husband-

February 6, 2025 at 4:22 pmBruh then in that case the parents should disown her as well lol. There are millions of cases in India where the other partner cucks off the parents by manipulating their daughter/son.
Best bet is to disown her as the fate of these types of parents is usually shit in the longer run.

February 6, 2025 at 4:29 pmOf course not. How can HE sell a property that was GIVEN to HER by HER PARENTS? Is he on the title as sole owner or joint owner with her? In any case, he would need her signature and her to come in person to the authorities to record the transfer of property. I think her parents need to file a police case and also talk to the buyer of the property. Tell the buyer this was done without their daughter’s consent and to retrieve their money from this jerk.I don’t think she’s safe with her husband. Any person who can resort to such lows cannot be trusted. Tomorrow, he might sell her medicines in the black market or pimp her out. I know this sounds extreme, but a leech like this man can go to any lengths to mooch money from whoever he can.

February 6, 2025 at 4:50 pmSad part is she’s on his side 100%. That’s where these poor parents are stuck . They filed a police case twice & both times she went & vouched for him. He doesn’t do anything for her but she still support him only . If she had agreed for divorce things would have been so much easier.-

February 6, 2025 at 6:50 pmIt is between husband and wife.. leave it that way… neither her parents nor you should involve in this specific case -

February 7, 2025 at 4:22 amNAL…. but I knew a couple in their 20s who had a somewhat applicable situation. It was an LM where a girl (relative) was from a wealthy background. She has no job, dont know housework, etc., so the husband and his dad demanded money from her parents to take care of her.Her parents had good influence through cops and lawyers, but nothing could be done legally bcz the girl agreed with him and wanted to live with him. The best the parents could do was to not give money to them (then the marriage fell apart cz the girl couldn’t adjust her lifestyle)
I know this is very different (younger couple and parents aren’t paying bcz they hate the guy – no affordability issues). But the point i tried to get across is that unless the wife wants to do something about it, you all are just a powerless third party there.

February 6, 2025 at 5:40 pmThat’s what is called ” dowry”. You could escape this by asking him to pay to his daughter directly. Keep yourself out of this equation. -

February 6, 2025 at 6:43 pmNo because it’s the husbands obligation to maintain his wife. Father’s obligation to maintain daughter ends once gets married under Hindu laws. This demand by husband is considered a dowry demand and is a punishable offence under the law. -

February 6, 2025 at 6:46 pmI hope husband was aware of her state when the marriage happened…or the health issue came up after marriage… irrespective it is the responsibility of the husband to take care .that is what the marriage is all about….looks like husband does not have any more attachment on her ..in this case…it is difficult unless there are kids to take care-

February 6, 2025 at 6:58 pmHe was 100% aware & he wanted to marry her badly. Now looking back they realize it was just for her money but it’s too late now

February 7, 2025 at 2:31 amDefinitely a case of dowry, but the parents paid dowry for a big reason. Saying as I see it.-

February 7, 2025 at 2:44 amEither get that daughter on their side and fight legally against him or let go of both of them and have zero contact with them.

February 7, 2025 at 4:02 amIts a husband / wife’s responsibility that they take care of their spouse and children. If the wife was given a reasonable asset – then from an inheritance standpoint – the FIL had made suitable provision. The SIL should not be asking the FIL for funds, but he can request for help if the care of his wife is going beyond his means. This is something that needs to be worked out within the family.

February 7, 2025 at 8:12 amPoor parents need to accumulate whatever they have left, find a good old age home and live the rest of their lives in peace. It looks like their entire lives were hijacked by this woman and her constant issues, because this can’t be just starting out now. Let her do whatever she can with her husband and leave it to her fate. I know this sounds harsh, but there’s no other way out of it. Anyway she is going to inherit whatever they leave behind, and in their 80s any day they can have some health issues and then what?
Be wise, at least spend the last years with some semblance of mental peace. And no, the law is no t going to help.
