We are a couple living in Goa for the past 3 years. Both of us are Indian citizens and are looking to register our marriage under the Special Marriage Act. We have a notarised rental agreement showing over 40 months of residence, and I also hold an HP LPG connection at this address.

We are first- and third-generation atheists respectively, and due to our personal beliefs, we would not like to obtain a Saptapadi or any religious certificate from a place of worship. Hereditarily, we come from Hindu backgrounds.

We would like to understand our rights, the requirements, and the process we need to follow. Also, is the implementation of the Act any different in Goa compared to other states?

Additionally, our parents were migrants in the cities we grew up in. Although we have Aadhaar cards from our respective states, we do not have a permanent home or address in either place, as our parents are nearing retirement and our native states are different from the cities where we were raised.
