Street photography illegal?

I have encountered one incident while taking pictures in street in Pune. Police car approached me and told me it is offence to take pictures of people. I have showed them my photographs there were people in them but none of them were clearly visible/face not visible. they obviously wanted money so they pushed me hard to go with them to police station and I was scared but I argued a lot about there were no people in my photos. Ultimately after 30 mins of talk they finally told me to get out of there. This happened in Pune, Hinjewadi Phase 1 today.

My question is, I am a newbie street photographer. How can I handle these kind of situations in future?

While photographing, always be in a group as it is safer with more people with you. Police won’t harass if you are in a group.

Always protect your gear.

And use gear which is minimal and inconspicuous.

Idiots just harassing you. There is no such rule. If that was true CCTV cameras would be illegal as well.

Read up on laws and educate yourself. Half the cops are just out to make a quick buck for themselves.

1 was once told having 1+ email ID is illegal per IT act and was harassed. All this happened because I complained on them through twitter on my local area police corrupt practices through my fake secondary account.

Taking pictures in public spaces should be alright unless particularly prohibited (Temple, etc)
