Im having a really tough time writing this and I am in deep stress because of this.

        So here’s the whole story:-

Im an Indian (M25), went UK for my masters and after completing , successfully managed to find an internship in a Scotland based startup. I did a 6 month internship with them and eventually they offered me a graduate role (Graduate Software Engineer) and I was also performing the duties of a Scrum master. My PSW (post study work visa) expired back in November. The company had promised to give me sponsorship when they get the license because they didn’t have license at that time.

So what happened is my visa expired and they weren’t able to sort the sponsorship license thing. So they offered me a remote work-from-India contract (Like as a freelancer- I have to send them invoices). But reduced my pay by half because they wanted to pay me in local rates. I tried to negotiate but it was tough and sponsorship was still on table so I continued to work for them from India.

Now what’s happening is they haven’t been paying me on time. It’s the start of March and I’ve literally only received my November salary till now. I talk with my CEO daily to process my salary but she always gives a buttload of reasons and keeps holding my pay.

On top of that, in February they received some sort of special funding and they removed me out of the projects I was working on and handed them over to a contractor. Blamed my performance but I know I was working pretty fine for them. I internally got to know through some other colleagues that she got special funding and because of that handed the projects to them.

Im still working with them part-time only because I still haven’t received my previous payments. I have no clue what to do or what legal options I might have.

Hi you dont have any choice but to cajole them. Legal action in UK is pretty costly…so you will lose more money chasing your elusive salary.

FInd out where they are registered wether there is any regulator which oversees their activities, or there is any way of appealing against them without spending cash

you would be better off asking in r/legaladviceUK

however if the contract is with a british company, you will have luck contacting ACAS who deal with employee issues here in the uk

i would recommend them as first line

You’re in a tough spot. UK legal process is going to be expensive. Do calculations. Worth fighting?

Since this is kind of freelancing work don’t expect much. For your current project if you’re a critical resource stop working & tell CEO you can’t work untill your dues are cleared. In any case don’t work with company anymore. Its not worth. Find something else.

I was a critical resource because it’s a very small company. But in February they received some sort of special funding and they removed me out of the projects I was working on and handed them over to a contractor. Blamed my performance but I know I was working pretty fine for them. I internally got to know through some other colleagues who work locally, that she got special funding and because of that handed the projects to them. And all my work was constantly getting uploaded to Git so there’s no leverage.

Make a LinkedIn post & tag CEO if nothing works. Companies are scared of bad publicity.
