May 6, 2026 at 1:30 pmI’m currently living in a hostel in Pune, paying ₹13,000 per month, and I had given a ₹10,000 deposit when I moved in. I’ve stayed here for 2 months and recently decided to leave. I informed the owner one month in advance, as he had asked. Now he’s saying that since I stayed for only 2 months, I need to pay 18% GST on the total rent I paid (₹26,000), and that amount will be deducted from my deposit. He also mentioned that if I had stayed for at least 3 months, the GST wouldn’t apply and I would have received my full deposit back.
There was no written agreement or contract signed.
As far as I know, tax cannot be applied retrospectively or deducted from the security deposit. They’ve also never really shared proper invoices with me.
Am I in the right or the wrong, please help, I’ll answer all questions regarding. Thanks.

May 6, 2026 at 4:51 pmthis kind of thing gets confusing because hostel owners sometimes mix internal rules with tax explanations and tenants only hear about it while leaving which feels unfair especially when nothing was clearly discussed upfront the part that usually matters most in situations like this is what was actually communicated at the beginning about gst deposits and minimum stay because later verbal terms become hard to prove from either side also the lack of invoices and written agreement changes the picture a bit have they ever earlier mentioned this 3 month gst condition anywhere in messages brochures or payment receipts or did it suddenly appear only when you asked for the deposit back-

May 6, 2026 at 5:33 pmThey’d only told that I had to notify a month before leaving, which I did. That’s when they told me this 3 month thing
