I am in a difficult situation and need some advice. I recently had surgery, and my doctor has told me to avoid travel, not lift anything more than 1-2 kg, and follow a strict recovery plan for at least a month.

The problem is that my university requires me to be physically present for a capstone project review. Traveling to campus is not easy as I have to change two trains, and there are no direct flights either. In my current condition, traveling is not possible.

My parents have already contacted the university through email and phone. They said they would review my case, but I have not received any confirmation. I am really worried that they might reduce my marks even though I have no control over this situation. I understand that the university has rules, but this is a medical issue, and I feel helpless.

I also do not know how much the reduction in marks will be, and I do not want to fail at this stage, especially since I am joining an MBA college this year. This situation is causing me a lot of stress, and I am not sure what to do.

I have already sent my hospital discharge documents as proof, but I do not know what will happen. What should I do if they still do not accept my request? Any advice would be really helpful.

TL;DR: Had surgery, doctor advised no travel for a month, university still wants me to be physically present for a project review. Not sure how much marks will be cut, and I don’t want to fail since I am joining an MBA college this year. What can I do?

          Lawyer here, based in Delhi.

You have already done the right thing by submitting your medical records and informing the university in advance. If they still insist on physical presence despite your medical condition, that could amount to arbitrary action. Educational institutions are expected to act fairly and reasonably, especially when health is involved.

You can send a formal written representation to the Dean or Registrar, attaching your medical records again and requesting either an online review or a deferral without penalty. If they ignore or deny your request without a valid reason, you can approach the university’s grievance redressal cell or ombudsman. If there is still no resolution, you can consider legal options. Courts have in many cases intervened when academic authorities acted rigidly despite medical emergencies.
