April 29, 2025 at 7:10 amSo, I rented out a bedroom from a girl who already rented 2bhk apartment. Initially she told me that apartment rent is 30k. So each of us had to pay 15k. After I shifted, She used to taunt me saying I am not even charging a ruppee for all the things you are using. Initially, though I felt bad I didn’t say anything. After 2 months , I asked her the screenshot of the total rent paid to owner. She said it’s actually 28k and I am charging for appliances you are using. I was so disappointed. Then from that day she refunded the previously charged extra amount which is 2k. And from that month I started paying 14k. Then again after 2 months some issues arose and we had arguments mostly due to her looking down upon me. So I decided to vacate. Now she is asking me to pay the dues for firstly agreed amount which is 4k. Should I pay or not? -

April 29, 2025 at 7:20 amNah, leave it be, don’t pay anything. She should not have returned the extra amount, what dues are even left here? You didn’t initially agree to pay her, this is a voidable contract, made just on parlance

“Should I pay nor not?”
Did you have a rental agreement with her? – or subletting agreement?
Is she your friend ? or acquaintance?
In most cases, it is illegal to sublet. if you have a contract then it depends on the contract.
If you do not have a contract then it depends on what your relationship is worth-

April 29, 2025 at 7:21 amI don’t even know her. Met her through telegram. No rental/subletting agreement. And right now we are not even on talking terms with each other. She talks only if she has to ask money.-

April 29, 2025 at 1:20 pmdelay it. avoid her. she’s most probably subletting the flat without the knowledge of the landlord, or in contravention of the society norms. you just have to say that you’ll tell everyone and she’ll have to vacate the flat too. it’s illegal to do so on so many levels. landlords give a copy of the agreement to the local police station for information sake which is a must, and your name wasn’t given even though you lived there and she’s to blame for that. tell her she can go to jail for that or have to pay hefty bail amounts etc.OP i think you’ve enough arsenal to threaten her into a waiver of whatever she’s demanding. use the arsenal wisely and timely…like when she’s absolutely livid or creates a scene or a ruckus, tell her calmly all the damage you can do to her and ask her to back off right away. it’ll work. nothing to worry about for you here. you’ve the higher ground

April 29, 2025 at 7:22 amlol no! absolutely not. do not even leave a single amount of deposit too, if any, with her. why be so gullible? first off, she cheated you, with lies and belittled you through and through. i think the moment you found out she cheated about the rent amount was the moment you should have called her out vehemently and quit the flat. Tell her you’d file an FIR for cheating (you’ve all the proof of paying extra and also the refund) if she pesters you even one bit over it. Over and above, also tell her that you’ll make sure no other flatmate shifts to her flat by warning anyone who walks up to her about her schemes and misdeeds. Convince her that it is for her own good to shut the fuck up and move on. She’ll probably go ahead and do it to other innocent dwellers anyway so don’t let her win, atleast with you. without an agreement between you two, and on top of cheating you (of which you’ve monthly proof) she has no legal entitlement too. Maybe a call to the landlord warning him/her about her schemes would also deter her from any further ado.-

April 29, 2025 at 7:27 amExactly when I found out, I said I needed time to think whether I should continue staying or not. That is why she refunded the money. But phonepe screenshots be considered as proofs?-

April 29, 2025 at 1:15 pmproof enough to whack her into senses and not be asking for a single penny any more. If you’re asking in the sense of FIRs, then yes, it’s enough proof to begin with. moreover, phone screenshots are backed by the transaction numbers and everything so it’s definitely solid collective proof that she deceived you into paying her more. Have you talked to the landlord and informed him of the deceit?-

April 29, 2025 at 8:07 amAbsolutely no.Threaten that you will tell the landlord that she was subletting the flat and earning money on it. No landlord likes to let unknown person in their apartment who they don’t know. Just move out when she is not home. Thats it.
