March 29, 2025 at 4:24 pmMy boyfriend lives in Powai, and I have been visiting him on some days when there is work from home or on weekends. When I first started visiting, there were no bye-laws regarding any visit from male/female guests of the tenant. After a few days, there is a new bye-law where the male/female guests are not allowed to stay in the flat past 9 pm. Due to an emergency, I had to visit him late at night, and I was asked to leave unless and until the owner specifically mailed the building manager that he/she has no issues in letting the guests stay beyond the stated time. The owner refused to do that because they did not want to get involved in this. But later, during rent renewal, they specifically stated that they had no issue with the tenant bringing in any guest of theirs and staying, and the responsibility lies with the tenant.Even then, the watchman of the building stopped us a couple of times because he refused to believe that there was such an agreement. Only when the building manager told him to, he allowed us to come inside when we both had arrived in Mumbai late at night and decided to stay at his place. Later, the building manager started harassing the owner regarding the visits I pay him and how it is unethical. The owner, being someone who does not want to get involved, writes the letter stating to seek permission from them no matter who the guest is and then writing an email to society manager, further putting more restrictions on my visits to their flat.
Now tell me, what did we do to warrant such treatment? Neither did we party, nor did we make any noise. We were well within the privacy of the home. Why do people want to get involved in this and make it more difficult for us when there is no trouble caused whatsoever? You’d assume that Powai, which is assumed to be of high standard, would have sensible people, but nope. This is a country where there is no respect for privacy, and people wonder why people choose to leave.

March 29, 2025 at 4:29 pmIt’s a his house his rules kind of a situation. Obviously he does not want any liability should anything happen. This is india after all. It’s a “shoot first, ask questions later” kind of society-

March 29, 2025 at 4:37 pmHi, This happened to me as well. You can’t do anything here. You don’t own the house, you’re not a part of building management. You can try to bribe the security guard but if you don’t want to do thatz find a nice flat which is not in gated. You didn’t do anything to warranty such treatment, shit happens in life, be thankful your owner is not against you.-

March 29, 2025 at 5:30 pmLegally you can try to do so many things but trust me, it’s not worth it, find a better location which is open to such restrictions.
Usually these types of restrictions are put by RWA, they are allowed to do so, that is debatable till what extent since the owner of property is someone else, but even that person won’t help if things go legal.-

March 29, 2025 at 6:30 pmGuys, I know I’m probably going to be hammered for this. But hear me out.Indian Law system is not the same as western. What we see in the movies/series does not work here. The further you stay away from Police and law the better.

March 30, 2025 at 7:19 amAbsolutely right. Young people will learn it the hard way. The country needs fundamental changes in how it is being handled. Right now we are only going backwards. As a common citizen, voting is the only thing that is in our hands. Use it wisely. Also spread the atrocities that you go through like these among your friends and make them think if theyβre truly living in a free country.-

March 30, 2025 at 8:35 amAt this point, your votes dont matter at all. Crooks have figured out how to win even when no one votes for them. And no one bats an eyelid anymore.

March 29, 2025 at 9:52 pmUtter nonsense, for some reason they wish to dictate the lives of people who reside in the building. Yes true, hence most people just want to leave this country for freedom and safety.-

March 29, 2025 at 10:43 pmAre they allowed to create bye-laws like this that are a violation of the fundamental rights? Let a lawyer answer. My guess is that one legal notice for harassment will straighten them.-

March 30, 2025 at 12:29 amProblem is that no tenant has the time or resources to spend 5 years and 10 lakhs in fighting a court case. It’s easier to just move elsewhere.-

March 30, 2025 at 4:27 amThat is true but my guess is that most of the time these are just hateful uncles on a power trip who will also back down when they realise that they will get into a court case because of this. A good lawyer is the best person to gauge the situation.

March 30, 2025 at 6:15 amBro I saw this post on IndiaSocial as well…listen you can’t do anything, just let it go. Your BF is not the owner of the place and even if by sheer legal power and all you win this, then the building society and the owner will later make your life difficult through other means and lastly agle L&L Agreement ke renewal pe they will kick you out. -
