        **TLDR:**

Buyer from different city in India. When I shared my phone number, wants address to pick up the goods. Goods not worth the travel cost so what kind of scam can he pull off with phone number and address?

        **DETAILS:**

Posted a furniture ad on OLX for Rs. 5000. Next day, got a response from a profile that was created at around 2.00 AM in the morning. This is how it went:

        1) On chat – Buyer asked for contact details. Proposed Rs. 4000 and asked for more photographs.

        2) On chat – I accepted the offer. Shared my mobile number and uploaded more photographs. Once, I shared my mobile number, I got the his phone number in a message within seconds (so this is probably an automated response).

The photographs uploaded on chat were not delivered so requested for his WhatsApp number since the number shared above did not have WhatsApp (checked with Truecaller).

        3) Got a call from him during the day. Could hear a lot of noises (like metal sheet beating in a factory in the background). He said he is from another state about 300 kms away and wanted to know my address.

Obviously I was suspicious and closed the call.

Now, I am unable to understand what kind of scam is going on with having phone number and address details?

Why would you try shipping on OLX? In my personal opinion, it’s better to share address and deal in cash. Online, there is more chance of a scam.

I think there is some misunderstanding. I did not try shipping. The probable scammer wanted to know my address which I did not divulge. So I am trying to understand what kind of scam can this person pull off with just phone number and address? Or maybe this is the first step in a series of steps.

This is. Anatural first step for me as a customer if I want to buy anything, honestly. To see if it’s feasible for me to collect the stuff or not. Say I live in Delhi but you live in Jaipur. To see of it’s convenient, I would like to know roughly from where I should pick it up. You don’t have to tell the full address, but the area around the house.

Yes, that is natural. But I had a thorough clarification with him. When I told him that his and mine cities are very far, his response was: “I am in a hurry to buy so I will travel”. It is not as if I am selling Taj Mahal that he will not find it in his city. I then just closed the call saying that let can let me know once he books the ticket/ confirms his travel.

Sometimes, you may travel for a good deal. This person doesn’t seem so. Trust your insticts. But anyways if someone asks the address, you can tell a broad area without giving the specifics.
