April 26, 2025 at 11:11 amJust came across something really weird — WhatsApp is apparently trying to trademark the word “WHATS” by itself in multiple classes in India, not sure about other places. It feels kind of insane because “whats” is literally just a normal English word and a really generic one. Like… what happens to phrases like “whats next” or “whats new” if they get the rights over it? Will regular businesses have to worry about using a super basic word now?
Does anyone know how likely it is that they will actually get this trademark? Also, is there a way for regular people (or businesses) like me to object to it during the process? I have applied for a trademark which contains the word “whats”. Will it get rejected? How can I get my trademark passed if they object?
Curious what everyone thinks and what should I do next…
