Who got the other assets such as property?

That’s often the underlying issue, which manifests itself in these demands. It would be good to have an open discussion where you talk about all the assets as well as the compensation for the years of care your family provided.

Complain about bribing and then publicly suggest bribing.

Of course, it’s important to protect the innocent. It’s also important to punish the guilty.

However, our judicial system is non-existent for the innocent or the guilty. It is openly manipulated for delays by criminal defendants. Witnesses turning hostile is routine. The delays are used to bribe or coerce the witnesses. When everything fails, appeal to the higher court on a frivolous ground. The higher courts will take years to hear it, while the case in the lower court grinds to a halt.

Just Google for the number of criminal cases that are still in the courts for 20 years or more. Is this justice?

Should we blame the Congress for the mass rapes in Ajmer? I don’t know who is involved. You seem to know. In any case, delays and turning witnesses goes on because our system of criminal law has been defunct for decades now.

It took 11 years to get a verdict. In those 11 years, witnesses can be paid off or scared off. The number of witnesses who turn hostile in Indian courts is off the charts. Delays directly lead to opportunities for witness tampering.

In all likelihood the case has seen numerous delays, many because the judges or the lawyers don’t show up. The case has probably been heard by multiple judges as judges are transferred or retire. The policemen who investigated the case may also have retired or moved on. It’s even possible that case files or actual evidence has been lost.

This is a common story. The sad part is that there are plenty of cases that are even older – more than 20 years old and still ongoing. What is the most damaging part of the story is that these problems aren’t even on the radar of the higher courts. They want everybody to get bail. The courts have already created ridiculous hurdles to the death penalty – hurdles that have zero basis in law. The activists who control the higher court bar association are only concerned about the rights of the accused. The victims and their families have no representation nor are their human rights of any value.

Justice left the Indian courts decades ago. Our delay prone hollow criminal law system invites extra-legal mechanisms as mobs and police deliver summary justice to the innocent and the guilty.

The consequences of not having a rule such as this is that the car park will turn into a dump that’s an eyesore and present risk to others.

If the parking spot had walls and a door with a lock, it would then be a garage. In that case, your argument might have more merit.

Here is a possibility that you haven’t considered: Your mom knows about it already. For the sake of the family and because she lacks options she is keeping quiet. If you expose this, you will add to the humiliation because she might still be forced to live with your father. You might make things much worse by going public.

At this stage an open discussion is necessary. It could go something like this:

When we had our initial discussion we agreed that there wouldn’t be any dowry. We want to clear the air. Do you expect us to bear the entire cost of the wedding? We understand that it is pretty common for the bride’s family to bear the cost. We also understand that you expect certain gold jewellery to be gifted to the bride. Is this true?

We respect your customs. Then list what you expect something like: We want the cost of the wedding to be shared. Any jewelry we give will be for our daughter and we will decide what to give.

The goal of this conversation is to be explicit and detailed without moralizing or making the other party look bad. You are asking for their bottom line while you also need a clear understanding of what your bottom line is. It would be best if you and your fiance agree beforehand. If you do so, you as a couple will have a lot of power in the negotiation.

Marriage is a big deal for your life. Like all big deals, negotiations will go on even after marriage. The trick is to establish boundaries and expectations at every step, so that you minimize surprises.

Don’t you have better things to do? These things happen sometimes. You would have taken a different job even after acceptance, if that job offered more money. Your tantrums demonstrate that you are immature.

You are also destroying the value of reviews. If everybody with a grouse did this, nobody would take reviews seriously. You harm others by your anti-social behavior.

No wonder, we lack civic sense and civility.

There are some new medicines for schizophrenia that need to be injected only once a month. They can help in compliance. Ask the doctor to see if they are available in India.
