You’re right. Thats a human tendency to err in judging a close person.
Imagine being in the center of a flooded town, desperately waiting for help. A boat comes to you and the boatman tells you that you shouldn’t have come to this town at this time of year and leaves.
OP will probably feel the same way for any relationship advice in a similar way.

Legally it would be quite challenging for you to get back your money.
Try speaking to his dad about it. You probably get some amount back.
You can take it as a bad investment too. You invested, you lost. We all do.
