Never, and i mean never hand it over, atleast not until you can blindly trust your husband. And even then, only keep it in a joint locker with the husband, no mother in law or anyone else should have access. My best friend’s sister is going through a bitter divorce, her ex husband and Mil kept all her jewellery in their custody (worth over 25 lakhs gifted by her parents) initially, and are now are refusing to hand it over and are claiming in court that they don’t have it. It’s almost confirmed that they have sold off the jewellery etc but this becomes very difficult to prove so they may unfortunately never recover that jewellery. They even kept all the silver that was gifted. Be extremely careful.
