They think the surname must be the father’s name. This is of course not true. Now that your first passport has your father’s name in it, there is one way to resolve it. The procedure for the passport name update is that you need to put up an ad in 2 newspapers, one in the local language and the other in English. Your name change ad will appear as “I have changed my name from ‘A B C’ to ‘A B’ for the passport name update”. The newspaper agency will take care of it. You need to submit an affidavit to the newspaper agency.
The next steps for you are:
1. Put your passport application on hold as you can show the newspaper ad once it’s published. That will be sufficient as a proof to change the name to A B, A being given name and B being the surname.
2. Contact any newspaper agency in your city or state. Just Google “name change newspaper ads” to find out more
3. Complete the procedures with them and get it published
4. Once published, reschedule your appointment.
5. Take a newspaper with you along with other documents. The passport officer will happily accept it
6. Your passport will be processed smoothly with the new naming style you chose.Once again, you are doing the right thing. Your name must not necessarily include your father’s name. That’s a myth. Your father’s name has a dedicated place for it in the passport last page.
Keep us updated on how it goes!
