Saving the marriage will be mostly a futile effort unless the husband has some conscience.

Save all the evidence and let the in laws and husband go through the law. Let the husband pay the maintenance for the baby too. The laws are created for such genuine cases. Use it.

For renewal – police verification can happen post receipt of passport.

I am not aware of the rules around renting. So can’t comment on that.

Do check the status of your passport application on the portal. There might be police verification pending.

The police might be looking at envelope by invoking fear as suggested by others.

From a practical point of view, resolving amicably with them is the best way forward.
