Make sure they lodge an FIR and get the FIR copy, that is a way to make sure that they will act upon it and you have all the rights to follow up on the proceedings. Write the complaint beforehand prior to going to the station. Don’t worry about the escalation. The complaint itself is a documented proof that for anything else happening to your friend, he is responsible for it.

The cops will take care of it. Whether it’s your friend or gf, you don’t have to be scared so much. The only reason these guys do this is because of the fact that people are afraid to go to the station. Once you overcome that part, he will learn his lesson and you would be doing a favour to a lot more people than you know, so pls do it without any fear.

Looks like a guy who would do this to several other people as well so a legal complaint is a good option. If your friend is not willing to go that far then ask her to change her number. There is no 3rd option.
