February 26, 2025 at 10:06 amI know people here are quite dismissive on this post, but I am so relieved to finally see a post acknowledging AI, and the possibility of the potential disruption it may cause in the country.I don’t know why AI hasn’t been brought to mainstream news already, other than for its ‘quirkiness’ and ‘novelty’. It is very much capable of replicating the kind of labor that is predominant in the Indian service sector, nicely referred as the ‘laptop class’ by OP (who are also likely to be the largest demographic of Reddit India).
We’re literally in the verge of achieving AGI, and soon after that ASI will come to fruition. Even if it displaces like 10-25% of the job market (a very conservative estimate), the fallout to it will be massive. Knowing how the likely future would pan out, and realizing there’s little anyone, let alone me, can do about it, makes me very worried and depressed.
To be clear, I’m all for the society getting rid of these essentially low value, artificially elevated and unfair jobs but only if truly beneficial social schemes are implemented like UBI. I know something like that sounds laughable in India, but I can’t come up with anything better that would reduce the impact of this impending disruption.
Hopefully, public consciousness starts taking note of this, and takes a more proactive approach for the coming times.
