Point is there is nothing guilty about changing one’s mind, it’s a human right. Forcing anyone to go through with a marriage they don’t want is what should be illegal.

I saw that in movies like raja ki aayegi baaraat but wasn’t sure it was actually true. These are horrible laws and need to be updated. If you aren’t happy having sex with someone you’re not married to, don’t, but if you do, don’t think they owe you marriage because they don’t. Everyone should have the right to change their mind, this is absolutely insane. Those of us born outside of India often romanticise being Indian and sometimes wish we were born/grew up in India as maybe it’d feel more homely (for lack of better word), it’s easy to feel torn as someone of Indian family background being born and raised in the west, but things like this really do make you realise how hard living in India must be. I am honestly shocked that there are legitimate laws stopping men from changing their mind about who they want to marry.

This is terrible. Everyone should have the right to change their mind.

but why did you and your mother have a problem with her visiting her own parents and her family home? You were staying with your parents and she can’t even regularly visit hers? Alimony and all is wrong, legally I hope it’s in your favour as marriage/divorce shouldn’t be a business transaction so all the best. However i am perplexed by your and your mother’s idea of it being ok for you guys to dictate how much she should see her own parents, very odd behaviour.

Is this an actual legal thing in India? You can’t change your mind about someone and leave them before getting married??

Sorry to ask a question and not have advice for you but genuinely curious, how did they have a Muslim ceremony without converting – is that possible? I heard Nikaah is only allowed between Muslims and converts.

Relatively recent maybe but still that’s the current legal advice. It’s good to know they revised to make more sense as forcing a woman to go through with a pregnancy against her own choice is horrific beyond comprehension.

According to India’s Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) Act, a woman in India does NOT need her husband’s consent to get an abortion. Both married and unmarried women are legally entitled to get an abortion up to 24 weeks into the pregnancy due to multiple reasons including if contraception failed. Only the consent of the pregnant woman is required for a termination of pregnancy – adult women in India do not require any other person’s consent regardless of their marital status.

I’m not from India and found it insane when I read your message so I googled and checked with AI, and you’re wrong. As per the Supreme Court of India, all women, including those who are not married, can get an abortion for up to 24 weeks. Thankfully it appears India doesn’t allow women to make a choice for their body!
