UIt was common in the schools I studied too. Though this age gap seems too much.
People in 8th -10th(age 12-13) standard generally date their own classmates..
A lot of girls date guys in the senior sections.
Girls in 11th -12th(age 14-17) frequently date college guys.
It is largely based on attractiveness and wealth.

UIndian parents are generally conservative and backwards in regards to women. Telling them about such issues can lead to violence and other restrictions.It is not like guys, where if your parents punch you, you can punch them back.
