You’re right, and I appreciate you pointing it out. I apologise for the tone, it did come off harsher than I intended. I just ment that clarity really helps, especially with legal stuff where details matter a lot.
Well written questions usually get better answers and can actually help others down the line too. But yeah, fair call on the tone, thanks for calling it out.

First of all, your post is extremely difficult to understand. There’s barely any punctuation, no clear sentence structure, and the timeline is all over the place. If you’re dealing with a serious legal issue like a land dispute involving 10 lakhs, you need to explain your problem properly. Use punctuation, structure your points clearly, or at the very least, use tools like ChatGPT to make it readable. If you cannot make the effort to explain your situation properly, you honestly don’t deserve a proper or helpful solution.

Not a lawyer. But here is my opinion.

Your friend is going through a tough time, and before jumping into any legal step, it’s very important she has an honest conversation with her husband first of her problems and try reaching a solution. Divorce in India is a long, mentally and financially draining process. Even people who “win” in court rarely feel happy because of how exhausting it is. So if there’s even a small chance of resolution through conversation, it’s worth exploring that first.

If things still don’t work out, here’s what she needs to know:

          Things to do-
          – Start noting down events and behaviour changes (diary, screenshots, therapy reports).
          – Talk to a lawyer to understand her rights.
          – Think about financial independence slowly (part-time or remote work).
          – Keep her documents and jewelry safe.

          1. Types of Divorce

Mutual Consent: Fastest and smoothest. Both agree to end the marriage and settle custody, alimony etc. Takes about 6 months to a year.

Contested Divorce: One person files, the other contests. Based on cruelty, adultery, etc. Can take years.

          2. Grounds for Divorce
          She can file based on:
          – Mental or emotional cruelty
          – Adultery (husband cheated)
Even if there’s no physical proof, a psychologists report and personal records can help.

          3. Child Custody
She will likely get custody since the kids are young (7 and 1) and she’s their primary caregiver.
The father can get visitation rights or shared custody if agreed.
The court always puts the child’s best interest first.

          4. Alimony and Child Support
          – She can ask for monthly or lump sum alimony since she hasn’t worked in years.
          – The father is legally responsible for all child-related expenses.
          – Courts look at the husband’s income, lifestyle, and family needs.

          5. Property
          – She may not get a share of property in his name, but she can ask to live there under domestic violence laws.
          – Jewelry and gifts from her side (stridhan) are hers.

Sorry you had to go through this, man. What happened to you sounds like a nightmare, and it’s totally understandable that you’re feeling shaken up. This kind of harassment is a harsh reality in some places, where corrupt cops prey on people’s fear and lack of legal know-how. It’s not fair, and it’s not your fault for not expecting it—most of us wouldn’t. Let’s break this down and figure out what you can take from it without risking your career.

First off, treat this as an expensive lesson about how some police operate. The law in India can be a mess because of officers like this who twist it for their own gain. That said, there are honest cops higher up the chain who these guys are terrified of. If you’d calmly pushed back—say, by agreeing to go to the police station and insisting he write an official challan (fine) that you’d challenge in court—he might’ve backed off or at least not squeezed you for â‚č16k. The trick is they bank on you panicking and paying up to avoid trouble. From what you’ve said, carrying sealed beer bottles isn’t inherently illegal in West Bengal unless you’re transporting it across state lines without a permit or breaking some local dry zone rule (which he didn’t even specify). His vagueness about your “crime” is a red flag—he was likely fishing for a bribe, not enforcing anything legit.

Here’s the practical side: in situations like this, staying calm and reading the cop’s vibe can save you. Check his attitude, his body language—is he aggressive but shaky? Drunk or sloppy? That can tell you how serious he is or if he’s just bullying for cash. Ask yourself what you actually did wrong under the law (not what he’s yelling about). You had your license, the car was legit, no one was drinking—sounds like he had nothing solid. If you’d called his bluff and said, “Okay, let’s go to the station and sort this out officially,” he might’ve folded. Most of these guys don’t want paperwork or scrutiny from their bosses. Easier said than done, I know—4 hours of harassment would rattle anyone, and I’m not judging you for paying to get out. You were scared about your job, and that’s a real concern.

Next time (hope there isn’t one), you’ve got more tools. One cool trick: use ChatGPT or something similar if you’ve got even a scrap of signal. Type in “is it illegal to carry sealed beer bottles in a car in West Bengal” or “what to do if a cop asks for a bribe in India”—it can give you quick clarity on the law and some basic moves to try. Knowledge is power here. Also, keep a digital copy of your car docs on your phone—saves the “no hard copy” hassle.

For now, don’t beat yourself up over this. You’re not the first to get shaken down, and sadly, you won’t be the last. On the money front, talk to your friends—explain you’re strapped and see if they’ll give you time to pay back. As for your career, this won’t touch it unless there’s an official FIR or arrest record, which it doesn’t sound like there is. You said they did “some documentation” at the station—what was it? If it’s just a vague log entry and not a formal case, you’re probably fine. If you’re paranoid, you could quietly check with a lawyer later, but don’t stir the pot unless you have to.

I’m not a lawyer, so this isn’t legal advice—just a fellow Redditor trying to help. Hang out on this sub, read up on what others go through, and see what real lawyers suggest in similar spots. You’ll pick up some street-smarts that way. Take it easy, bro—you’ll bounce back from this.

A bond is only legal if the company has spent significant money on training you.
If not, then the bond is not legally binding.

As per section 27 of the Contract Act, 1872, any agreement in restraint of trade or profession is void. Therefore, any terms and conditions of the agreement which directly or indirectly either compels the employee to serve the employer or restrict them from joining competitor or other employer is not valid under the law. The employee, by signing a contract of employment, does not sign a bond of slavery and, therefore, the employee always has the right to resign the employment even if he has agreed to serve the employer for specific time period.

                          1. The No-Show clause is not enforceable in India because offer letters are not binding employment contracts until you start working. Companies must prove actual financial loss, which is very difficult. Unless they are sending you somewhere to train you, spending money on your training, they cannot prove financial loss.

                          2. Worst-case scenario? They might send a legal notice, but it’s rare. A legal notice is just a demand letter, not a lawsuit. Most companies don’t take further action because it’s costly and unlikely to succeed.

                          3. Will it affect background verification? No, legal notices do not appear in background checks since they are not criminal records.
